ESSENTIAL NEED

Sports are essential for youth in our community, providing opportunities for personal growth, physical activity, and connection.

However, many in our community face barriers to accessing these programs, including limited resources, transportation challenges, and financial constraints.

By uniting as a community, we can provide the next generation with opportunities to grow, gain new skills, and build connections.

Soccer holds a significant place in our history, deeply rooted in the legacy of our parents, grandparents, and ancestors who were not only passionate about the sport but also athletically gifted.

  • Lack of opportunity
  • Cultural insensitivity
  • Travel distance to facilities
  • Isolation
  • Health issues
  • Inter-generational trauma from residential schools
  • Profound trauma and fear experienced both during and after 'The Scoop'
  • Institutional and cultural restrictions

The BC Indigenous Provincial Championships is an important component of the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council’s Provincial Strategy.

The two-day annual event providing Indigenous athletes and coaches from First Nations, Métis Chartered Communities, and Friendship Centres across the province a chance to connect and compete.

It promotes sport excellence while celebrating cultural unity and pride.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has issued several Calls to Action to address these barriers, including:

  • Developing national sports programs and initiatives that include Indigenous peoples

  • Creating an elite development program for Indigenous athletes

  • Developing anti-racism awareness programs
  • T-and-R-graphic

Now is our time to rise, reclaim, and thrive through sport!
